Summary: The Roanoke Times | roanoke.com seeks an enterprising and energetic intern reporter to cover police and other general news five night a week. This six-month internship (some flexibility on start and end dates) is an opportunity for a college student or recent college graduate to gain experience while also helping us build our digital-first newsroom. We want interns who thrive on change, experimentation and a journalistic mission to serve the community. Our newsroom wants to build on the special recognition we received recently from the Society for News Design, which noted that we don’t let our relative size limit our creativity. Roanoke.com is “deep within their community,” the SND judges said. “The multimedia storytelling explores highly personal issues and forces viewers to confront issues that rarely surface in their daily lives.”

Essential duties and responsibilities:
Covers breaking news and other general assignment news assigned by editors

Contributes breaking news posts to roanoke.com and uses Twitter to cover news and engage readers

Conceives photo and graphics ideas to help illustrate stories.

Typical work hours: 3-11 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday

Other duties as assigned

Minimum skills and qualifications:
Experience at a college media organization or the equivalent

Previous daily newspaper internships preferred

Must be a college student or recent graduate

Proven ability to write clearly, accurately and meet deadlines

Comfortable using a smart phone, other digital tools and social media to push out news and visuals quickly and engage readers.

Collegial, collaborative and decisive; comfortable with change and able to adapt.
