Position Summary
Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties (VTIP) is responsible for administering and managing Virginia Tech's intellectual property, transferring campus techno! logies for public use and benefit, and generating technology l! icense income for research and education; working under the supervision of the President, VTIP, the Licensing Associate is responsible for managing a portfolio of intellectual and tangible research properties developed by VT investigators comprising primarily basic engineering and physical science technologies (with other technology areas assigned as needed), including software; activities comprise soliciting and evaluating invention disclosures from the campus laboratories; conducting technology assessments from a commercial perspective; formulating and implementing licensing and intellectual property management strategies; marketing the technology to prospective licensees; coordinating the filing and prosecution of patent applications; negotiating and writing contractual agreements including letter agreements, secrecy agreements, options, and licenses; monitoring the performance of licensees under their agreements; facilitating the startup of new VTIP licensed technology-! based companies; and performing other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications for a Licensing Associate:
- An advanced or terminal degree in engineering, science, business or a related field with a comparable command of science and technology as it applies to commercial endeavors; or a BA/BS in engineering, science, business or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in technology commercialization, marketing or research.
- Demonstrated ability to understand the process of intellectual property management.
- Knowledge of commercial product development and the industrial sector.
- Working knowledge of patent and licensing law and practices.
- Demonstrated able to handle a wide variety of projects simultaneously while working with a variety of constituents including faculty, staff, attorneys, research sponsors, entrepreneurs, and industry representatives.
- Well organi! zed with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
- Str! ong software application skills, including but not limited to, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Web-based information retrieval, information and database management.
Required Qualifications for a Senior Licensing Associate:
- The senior licensing associate will have the ability to handle a variety of complex cases and requires a high degree of technical and business expertise, and a familiarity with the legal issues involved in technology transfer and commercialization.
- Significant experience reviewing invention disclosures.
- Experience developing strategies for the commercialization of university generated intellectual property.
- Working knowledge of a university's internal policies and guidelines as well as those governing contracts granted by federal governments and other sponsors.
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
- Demons! trated ability to analyze information and objectives to define problems, identify relevant issues or concerns, formulate alternatives to affect resolution, and select alternative problem resolutions having evaluated all implications for implementation of a given solution.
- Prior work experience in industry, preferably in science or technology related industry.
- Prior experience related to patent law, marketing, and licensing contracts, in a university or industry setting.
- Education and/or experience in mechanical and/or biomedical engineering preferred.
