Description: Dept of Social Services is in need of Hearing Officer right now, this job will be placed in Virginia. Adjudicates Benefits/Services appeals in administrative hearings for aggrieved parties who are dissatisfied with the action of the local department of social services. Ensures assigned appeals, within the respective programs, are conducted in an impartial manner and comply with state and federal law and regulations. Position ensures hearings are expediently held, and decisions are rendered in writing in a timely manner and c! ompetently addresses all of the issues presented by the parties. Serve as a member of the Appeals and Fair Hearings Unit and complete special projects/assignments and other essential duties as directed by Program Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of the administrative fair hearing process. Possess the ability to analyze and research complex regulatory, statutory and legal issues; to interpret complex legal documents, laws, regulations and policies; to assess and prioritize workload; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a variety of customers; and to complete work within prescribed timelines. Possess knowledge of Department of Social Services' Benefit and Service Programs and applicable laws, regulations and policies. Skill in use of PC/on-line applications and systems to extract and analyze data, produce reports and write correspondence.

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED! QUALIFICATIONS:
Degree from an accredited college or ! university with emphasis on social work, law, or a related subject area. Preference is for a candidate with a JD, as attorneys generally represent parties to benefits and services appeals and these hearings can be contentious and involve legal issues.

Special Requirements

A criminal history background check will be conducted.

VDSS Employees whose positions are in Band 5 and above perform in emergency roles if needed during state or federal disaster declarations. This is in accordance with the agency's emergency responsibilities. The selected candidate will be assigned to an emergency role upon hire and is expected to perform in that capacity as needed.
