JOB DESCRIPTION

This is a part-time position with the Department of Building & Development, Engineering Division. Responsibilities include review of technical archaeological reports generated by County requirements as part of the land development process and work with applicants, staff members, engineers, developers, attorneys, and the general public regarding preservation or mitigation of significant cultural resources. Responsibilities also include assisting in the creation and maintenance of a GIS-based countywide predictive model, and coordinating with the state on archaeological investigative standards. Must be able to work as part of a team of environmental and cultural resource specialists and to work effectively with the aforementioned stakeholders to identify and preserve archaeological resources as provided for in County regulatory documents. Excellent public speaking and writing skills required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology with concentration in Archaeology or directly related field, and a minimum of 4 years field experience to include individual or team projects. A Masters degree in Anthropology with concentration in Archaeology is preferred. Experience in the field of cultural resources management, specifically in Virginia or the Mid-Atlantic region, is preferred. Must have strong working knowledge of Virginia standards for archaeological investigation and the Federal Section 106 process.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be available for duty beyond the normal workday as required to attend various meetings.
