The Legal Aid Justice Center and Central Virginia Legal Aid Society are seeking several individuals to serv! e as Navigators to educate individuals and small businesses about health insurance coverage options and to provide one-on-one application assistance. Navigators will be placed in Charlottesville, Richmond and Petersburg.
Responsibilities:
¨ Develop and implement an outreach plan and application-assistance project for entire service area.
¨ Comply with federal regulations governing navigators.
¨ Complete federally required navigator training and pass tests for certification.
¨ Complete Virginia-specific Medicaid and FAMIS training.
¨ Assist uninsured individuals, families and small businesses with completion of applications for health insurance programs (Medicaid, FAMIS, private coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace).
¨ Educate the public and individuals about the health insurance affordability programs through multiple community events, local publicity and direct communications.
¨ D! evelop contacts within the community to assist in promoting af! fordability programs to the uninsured.
¨ Develop relationships with departments of social services, schools, health departments, Chambers of Commerce, unemployment counselors, and other potential partners to provide information and assistance.
¨ Coordinate, manage, and/or assist with community outreach events.
¨ Collect data, maintain accurate records and generate required reports on outreach activities, the number of applications submitted, the number of individuals/families/businesses enrolled, and other required data.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
¨ Demonstrate initiative and ability to function independently.
¨ Must have excellent interpersonal communication and public speaking skills.
¨ Must be detail-oriented and have the ability to focus on detailed paperwork.
¨ Ability to relate to people from a variety of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
¨ Computer literacy ( Microso! ft Office, especially Word and Access ).
¨ Knowledge about health insurance programs (Medicaid, FAMIS, private coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace) and local support agencies (Departments of Social Services, Health, etc .).
¨ Must have own means of reliable transportation and ability to travel within the target region.
¨ Flexibility to work weekends or evening hours (especially during open enrollment from October 1, 2013 â€" March 31, 2014) and to meet with families as required, including home visitation.
Education and experience:
¨ Bachelor's degree required; law degree a plus.
¨ One to three years of relevant experience.
Preferences:
¨ Spanish fluency preferred, but not required.
¨ Prior experience with health insurance programs as a lawyer, paralegal, broker, or caseworker.
