Responsibilities:
Based on strategy defined by the respective Deputy Managing Partner(s), formulate business development (BD) plans for the firmâs key groups â" Industries, Litigation or Corporate.
Collaborate with designated department/team chairs (most strategically significant departments/teams within key groups) to develop BD plans.
Provide strategic direction, coordination and implementation of all aspects of respective BD plans and programs. Drive the strategy for elements of the BD plan, incl! uding:
collateral, bios and representative work;
semin! ars, webinars, receptions and major sponsorships;
eAlerts/newsletters;
league tables/rankings;
speaking and sponsorships; and
external and internal visibility through PR, Portal news and more.
Manage and mentor team of BD professionals assigned to the respective group and affiliated departments/teams.
Serve as the high-level, go-to contact for Deputy Managing Partner(s), respective groups and affiliated departments/teams.
Collaborate with other MBD professionals (e.g., eCommunications team, Web team, Events professionals) to ensure successful execution of plan components, identification of cross-selling opportunities.
In collaboration with Manager, BD, identify changes in the BD environment, trends and competitive strategies, and evaluate, adjust or redraft BD plans accordingly.
Conduct BD training for attorneys, which includes preparing them for major client pitches.
Actively participate in the highest-value, sophisticated, competiti! ve opportunities, and be available as a resource for midlevel opportunities.
Drive targeting initiatives as identified in the business plans.
Budgeting (development, tracking and reporting).
Track outcomes of MBD strategies to ensure effectiveness of programs and tactics. Report the success rate of current strategies (ROI) and design future strategies.
Provide summary reports to Executive Director, Deputy Managing Partner(s) and firm management â" as requested.
Performs additional duties as directed.
Qualifications:
A. EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE:
Requires bachelorâs degree; JD or advanced degree preferred.
A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, business and practice development, or a related field; knowledge of the competitive landscape challenging major national law firms.
B. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Demonstrated capacity to develop and implement strate! gic business plans.
Ability to project personal credibility, profes! sionalism and a high degree of integrity among firm leadership, clients and firm management.
Ability to function independently and effectively in a matrix organization.
Strong manager who can direct, coach, motivate and inspire people to work hard.
Ability to quickly and pro-actively identify and analyze problems, develop solutions and deliver results.
Flexibility and willingness to work extended hours to meet demands of the role.
Some travel required.
Strategic thinker who understands branding and consistency of message and the look/feel.
Proven ability to build relationships with a wide range of people.
Ability to function in technology-rich environment.
Attention to detail, ensuring a quality product.
Strong planning and organizational skills.
Proven ability to develop winning proposals, pitches, presentations and other marketing material, as well as to coach lawyers on strategies to win business.
Excellent understanding an! d familiarity with all business aspects of the practice-client names (anchors and key clients), key leadership, billings and collections, client retention, new business, target accounts, regional and office metrics, portfolio and business goals.
Budget creation, management and innovation in maximizing the use of monies.
