Provides legal advice and recommendations for action to executives and management, which have or may have a sizable dollar impact on business activities and operations. Leve! rages knowledge of legal specialty in providing counsel and builds knowledge of the business through various functional assignments. Receives specific direction from management or more senior law professionals as to the outcomes, process and schedules expected.
Researches legal principles and precedents, consults with outside counsel, drafts and execute legal documents, gathers relevant information using multiple sources and methods, provides work guidance to other professional, paraprofessional and support staff in developing solutions to problems presented.
The privacy counsel position is one of several attorneys in the Office of Privacy (Legal/Government Affairs). We are a dynamic and collegial team, working alongside program managers and analyst team members to provide legal support for Sprintâ¢s privacy practice and privacy compliance program. The Counsel must understand existing and proposed state and federal laws and regulations , as well as best practi! ces, concerning privacy, data security, the internet of things! and telecom and internet media regulation. Counsel also must be comfortable assisting product development teams with privacy by design throughout the lifecycle of products and services.
This position requires the ability to develop strong working relationships with various internal business groups to ensure business projects account for privacy, internet and mobile telecom regulatory considerations. Equally important, the privacy counsel must work with business units to find solutions that ensure compliance is accomplished as efficiently, simply, and inexpensively as possible.
The privacy counsel must work well independently, with a minimum of supervision, in carrying out a wide variety of counseling activities on a broad range of privacy laws, regulations, self-regulatory frameworks and industry and government guidance as they may relate to Sprintâ¢s business and innovation efforts. Areas of work, among others, may include the following:
Assist in s! haping business requirements (Privacy By Design) for products, services, research and internal practices
Negotiate contracts
Manage compliance with Do Not Contact rules, Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI) rules, data breach and other FCC-specific privacy, data and security issues
Develop internal privacy communications and training
Review privacy-related legislation and regulations
Assist in developing privacy tools, flags and metrics for data management
Provide privacy counsel on subjects including, the Internet of Things,
Internet and mobile advertising privacy issues, data analytics, financial privacy, HIPAA, international data protection
(The ideal candidate will possess the following key knowledge, skills or abilities:
Technical degree and prior experience in technical field (preferred)
Technical background in IT systems, application and software development (preferred)
Work experience with data analyti! cs
Demonstrated knowledge of processes and procedures relating to c! ustomer preference management
Data Breach/Incident Prevention and Response Management experience
Successful contract negotiation experience
Demonstrated work experience/knowledge of internet and mobile interest-based advertising
Work experience with data analytics
Social Media experience
CIPP certification from the International Association of Privacy Professionals preferred; other security or technology credentials a plus .
Basic Qualifications
Juris Doctorate required
Three years legal work experience as an attorney
Current state bar license and eligible to obtain license from state where position is located
Preferred Qualifications
6 years of privacy-specific counsel experience
6-10 years actively practicing as an attorney; prefer a broad legal background with skills in litigation/enforcement, counseling, contract negotiations
