Opower is looking for an talented IP attorney to help us manage and grow our patent portfolio and better capture the value of the IP we createpatent agent to help us capture the value of o! ur IP. We are looking for an energetic, motivated individual who is comfortable working with talented, ambitious teammates. A successful applicant will be equally comfortable discussing technical details with our software engineers, crafting a user friendly processes to protect trade secrets, writing and reviewing patent applications, managing our work with outside counsel, and crafting an overall IP strategy for the company. This role will report to Reporting to Opower’s SVP of Regulatory Affairs and General Counsel, the patent agent will be comfortable establishing a world-class patent process, working closely with our R&D teams to capture ideas worth pursuing, and distilling the information for members of the senior management team. In this role you’re going to be asked to roll up your sleeves and dive into technical details, then jump back and think strategically, all in a fast paced and growing company.
Responsibilities
Manage all aspects of Opowe! r’s IP portfolio, from high level strategy to drafting inven! tion disclosures
Develop a creative and motivating system to get our engineers to think of and disclose IP.
In conjunction with Opower’s Legal team, work with external counsel to prepare and prosecute PCT, US and foreign patent applications.
Advise the R&D and business development teams on IP matters.
Meet Work closely with product managers and engineers on a periodic basis to determine identify novel inventions ideas and assist in drafting invention disclosures.
Manage the Company’s existing IP portfolio requirements and monitor filing dates in conjunction with external counsel.
Perform US and foreign IP searches to determine patentability, freedom to operate, and to assist in the development of the Company’s IP strategy.
In conjunction with senior management, exercise great judgment in determining which ideas are worth patenting and external counsel, assist in IP due-diligence examinations with collabora! tors, partners and investors.
Monitor and maintain the Company’s IP processes consistent with best practices.Draft lots and lots of patent applications.
In conjunction with Opower’s Legal team, work with external counsel to prepare patent applications.
About you
You have a computer science background and you have worked closely with software engineers in a technical capacity.
You have significant experience with algorithm-based software or algorithm-based software patents.
You have at least four years of experience at a top patent firm.
In house experience is a plus, but is not required. However, solid business judgment is non-negotiable.
You are a Patent Agent or Attorney with 3-5 years experience (corporate or law firm) licensed/admitted to practice before the US PTO and/or CIPO.
You have a computer science background or have worked closely with software engineers in a technical capacity.!
You have significant experience with algorithm-based software! patents.
You love creating and managing great information gathering processes, and are extremely detail oriented.
You have experience running prior-art/freedom-to-operate searches utilizing online databases.
You have strong communication skills.
