visual journalist to produce photos, video and multimedia for the newspaper, our
Web site and other digital platforms.

We are looking for someone ! who has a passion for community-based storytelling
and embraces using new media in their reporting. We want someone who feels
comfortable tweeting a spot news photo from the scene one day, producing a video
on local elections the next and spending the third day going deep for an
enterprise multimedia project.

You will cover a wide range of daily assignments and be expected to find and
produce daily and in-depth stories. You will have flexible hours and need to
respond quickly to breaking news. Most importantly, we are looking for someone
with a dynamic personality who can work collaboratively as part of a creative
team.

The Roanoke Times has a newsroom of more than 70 journalists and is the
state’s largest-circulation newspaper west of Richmond. We have consistently
ranked in the top five newspapers in NPPA’s Region 3 for clip wins and have
won numerous state and national awards for our online and multimedia !
storytelling. Like most newspapers across the country, our! newsroom has gotten
smaller and more efficient, but there are great opportunities to shoot stories
that matter.

Last year, judges in SND’s Best of Digital News Design said this about our
work: “Roanoke’s coverage may not be able to be as broad as national or
international news organizations but it is deep within their community. The
multimedia storytelling explores highly personal issues and forces viewers to
confront issues that rarely surface in their daily lives.”

Minimum skills and qualifications:

• Four-yearcollege degree required with at least one years’ experience at a

daily newspaper or the equivalent in strong internships.

• Strong photography portfolio.
• Demonstrated experience shooting and editing video.
• Demonstrate! d ability to write descriptive and accurate photo captions on

deadline.

• Sound traditional news judgment and ethics.
• Adept with technology required to fill duties, such as Final Cut video editing

software and social media tools.
