To provide expertise to evaluate and analyze physician and staff practices and to provide recommendations to impact change in
practice. Responsible for investigating potential and actual claims, occurrences and complaints from date of notification to closure;
maintaining appropriate legal files; and reporting to the Director of Risk Management. Responsible for advance risk management
problem-solving strategies throughout the environment including on-call problem resolution. Responsible for risk management
analysis of data report generation and development and presentation of risk management education to physicians, staff, senior and
middle management and the governing board.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire
C urrent RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state required
C ertified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management! (C PHRM) preferred
C ertified Professional in Healthcare ! Quality (C PHQ) preferred
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment including CPR, etc
C urrent RN Virginia license required
AHA BLS HC P certification or equivalent required
C urrent C PHRM certification preferred
C urrent C PHQ certification preferred
Level and type of experience REQUIRED
Minimum of three (3) years of previous clinical nursing experience
Level and type of experience PREFERRED
Two (2) years of previous experience in risk management
Two (2) years of previous experience in presenting subject matter information and facilitating teamwork
Previous experience in a complex healthcare environment and organizational operations
Education/training REQUIRED
Bachelors Degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing
Education/training PREFERRED
Masters Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Public Health or Business Administration from an accredited progr! am

Serves as consultant to other Departments across VC UHS to ensure effective risk management programs and policies.
Additional position requirements such as shift rotations, weekends, environment, etc
Weekend and evening on-call
Performance Expectation: Pertains to Staff in Licensed Nursing Positions
Employee must complete 15 contact hours of C ontinuing Nursing Education during this evaluation cycle. Failure to achieve the required number of contact hours will result in the employee being ineligible to receive an overall performance rating above "Fully Meets".
2. Performance Expectation: Investigation
Undertakes an investigation of untoward events utilizing investigative and analytical expertise, all available records (medical and other), and contact with involved employees, physicians and patients and provides an investigative report, when appropriate, for analysis of liability or! potential liability.
Analyzes and evaluates patient/family grievan! ces/complaints relating to health care services. Reviews billing complaints that allege
patient mistreatment with recommendations regarding bill adjustment to the Director of Risk Management.
Develops loss control measures relating to patient care complaints, systems inefficiencies and environmental issues. Through education and building/maintenance of relationships with physicians and staff, promotes identification, reporting and minimization of adverse events, near misses and potential risks to patient safety to the health system and to providers.
3. Performance Expectation: Education/Promotion of Risk Minimization
Proactively seeks information from physicians and other staff to identify adverse events and potential risks in the health system.
Facilitates minimization of identified risks through working with individual staff managers, committees and making appropriate referral to the Performance Improvement Department.
Provides educational p! resentations focusing on identified areas of risk and/or system weaknesses. Develops and presents risk
management education to physicians and staff in the clinical areas. Facilitates teams or projects through to completion as requested.
C onducts orientation education for new employees as assigned.
4. Performance Expectation: Committee Participation
Supports the hospital operations via providing risk expertise on various health system committees, including those that require
information data reporting from Risk Management, as well as those that require expertise regarding risk identifications and minimization.
C onducts environmental safety rounds and attends family conferences, as deemed necessary. Maintains a high visibility in the
environment, stands in as chair and presents claim data and other pertinent information to the Risk Oversight C ommittees.
Maintains comprehensve and complete records and supplies such reports, compilation! s or historical data that may be required to Administration (i.e. contr! ibution to Board of Visitors Report, E.O.C . Report, and other risk reports). Able to stand in for Director. Acts as a mentor for professional development to other departmental staff members.
5. Performance Expectation: Reporting/Follow-up
Receives, reviews and evaluates reports of unusual occurrences.
Recommends changes in policies and procedures, practice patterns, staffing patterns, etc., based on occurrence data to correct identified deficiencies. Data entry and data analysis of occurrence information as requested.
Provides support to regulatory compliance processes, as well as external agency and internal investigative processes as directed.
6. Performance Expectation: Legal Process Facilitation
Assists physicians and other staff with understanding the subpoena process, as well as implications of receipt of subpoenas and attorney correspondence.
Assists staff and physicians to identify appropriate resources (General C ounsel, P! rofessional Liability staff ) to coordinate communication with attorneys, judges and other legal staff as appropriate.
