Opower is looking for a talented patent writer to help us capture the value of our IP. We are looking for an energetic, motivated individual who is comfortable working with talented, ambitious teammates. Reporting to Opower’s VP of Regulatory Affairs and General Counsel, the patent writer will be comfortable establishing a world-class patent process, working closely with our R&D teams to capture ideas worth pursuing, and distilling the information for members of the senior management team. In this role you’re going to be asked to roll up your sleeves and dive into technical details, then jump back and think strategically, all in a fast paced and growing company.
About you
You are a Patent Agent or Attorney with 3-5 years experience (corporate or law firm) registered to practice before the US PTO and/or CIPO.
You have a computer science background or have worked closely with software engineers in a technical capacity.
You have significant experience with algorithm-based software patents.
You love creating and managing great information gathering processes, and are extremely detail oriented.
You have experience running prior-art/freedom-to-operate searches utilizing online databases.
You have strong communication skills.
You work efficiently and excel in a dynamic team environment.
Responsibilities
In conjunction with Opower’s Legal team, work with external counsel to prepare and prosecute PCT, US and foreign patent applications.
Advise the R&D and business development teams on IP matters.
Meet with product managers and engineers on a periodic basis to determine novel inventions and assist in drafting invention disclosures.
Manage the Company’s existing IP portfolio requirements and monitor filing dates in conjunction with external counsel.
Perform US and foreign IP searches to determine patentability, freedom to operate, and to assist in the development of the Company’s IP strategy.
Monitor changes in IP law and assist in the evaluation of its impact on the company.
Monitor and maintain the Company’s IP processes consistent with best practices.
