The Detention Review Specialist will coordinate all detention related elements of Roanoke City’s Juvenile Justice System by tracking all cases in the juvenile detention system to i! nclude alternative programs, to identify and expedite those cases suitable for early release or step down to alternative programs. Perform duties under the general supervision of the Director of Court Services, who provides guidance and direction through periodic consultation and discussions. Requires initiative and ability to work independently as well as the ability to work effectively with Juvenile Court Judges, Court related staff, local and state administrators, other involved agencies and the general public. Graduation from an accredited College or University with a minimum of a BS or BA degree, preferably with a major in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology or a related Human Service area. Appropriate experience may substitute for the required degree. Knowledge of the juvenile justice system with considerable experience in case management. Knowledge of counseling practices particularly as related to the at-risk juvenile population; ability to interpre! t regulations, guidelines and statutes. Ability to accurately ! assess a client’s needs; ability to identify and utilize community service agencies; possess strong verbal and written communication. Possess a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Virginia and an acceptable driving record based on the City of Roanoke’s criteria. Must successfully complete a background investigation. Any person offered employment in this position shall be required to successfully pass testing for controlled substances.
