Assistant General Counsel The candidate will deliver quality legal services to assigned clients including managing legal projects and the leg! al budgets of projects. Will prepare, review, negotiate, interpret and advise on a wide range of documents. Advise and serve as a legal resource to management to facilitate business goals and facilitate compliance in structured regulatory environment. Be conversant on legal issues common to recurring matters and relationships (e.g. Stark, anti-kickback, tax exempt status). Interact with regulatory agencies and investigatory bodies as needed. Provide legal services relating to development, maintenance, direction and implementation of policies and procedures. Engage in cooperative and supportive manner with other corporate support departments, including Compliance and Audit Department. Be primarily responsible for particular lines of service and client department(s), with no supervision. Primarily responsible for major area of focus or specialization in the department. Act as contact attorney for various departments, as assigned from time to time. Provide operational manageme! nt duties of the legal department to include the supervision a! nd performance appraisal of administrative and paralegal staff. Manage projects on a budget-conscious basis. Supervise and review the work of outside counsel in appropriate circumstances. Provide mentoring and training for non-senior attorneys as from time to time assigned by the General Counsel to include training, work assignments, goal setting and performance appraisals. Provide department leadership in the absence of General Counsel. Collaborate with General Counsel on the assignment of duties to attorneys, senior attorneys and paralegal staff. Develop or facilitate the development of educational sessions for the legal department. Assist or take leadership role, as assigned by General Counsel, in department process and planning tasks. Keep General Counsel appropriately informed of activities and facilitate General Counsel's situational awareness. Handle other duties as may be assigned by the general counsel.
The candidate should have a J.D. degree. Must have 10! + years of experience practicing in the health care or insurance department of a law firm and/or in-house with a healthcare system or a health plan. Should be licensed to practice law in at least one state. If licensed in a state other than Virginia, must have Virginia Corporate Counsel license.
