The class is responsible for reviewing building and zoning permits, inspecting property within the City limits for proper adherence to zoning regulations and the issuing of notices and summonses of violations. The class works according to set procedures with limited supervision.

The Department of Community Development is seeking candidates for the position of Zoning Officer in the Division of Zoning Administration. The purpose of this position is to ensure enforcement of the City Zoning Ordinance through review of development proposals and field investigations.
The successful candidate will work independently with minimal supervision and perform the following duties: examining site plans to verify zoning requirements; conducting field inspections on properties; searching court records and other documents; researching permits for compliance with the Zoning Ordinance; testifying in court cases; attending meetings and hearings; providing technical information and interpretations to the general public; and inputting data in computer. The candidate must possess the following: strong customer service skills; able to work with a diverse public as well as professional customers such as realtors, developers, architects, engineers, and attorneys; solid organizational, and record keeping and analytical skills; able to meet deadlines; and demonstrate good written and oral communication skills.
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses:
Requires Associates degree or training equivalent to two years of college education or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
One year of experience in related field such as inspection or planning or Formal training (i.e., core course work in related fields to zoning) and/or Associates/Bachelor’s degree in related field to zoning or a combination thereof. Bachelor’s degree will substitute for one year of experience.
Virginia Driver’s License.
An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
